I showed my essay (for Ateneo de Manila college application) to my Aunt Myrna . Hmm, I had so much grammatical errors like the use of passive verbs and contractions. Anyway, I had to do a total rewrite because I wasn’t able to “define you as a person”.
Aunt: How do you define yourself as a person?
Me: I don’t even know who I am.
Aunt: Well, what would you label yourself?
Me: (haha, thinking label is the same as define) I am a restless person.
Aunt: restless may connote negativity.
Me: Oh, I have a sense of adventure.
It took me another hour just to finish a one page essay. It isn’t easy to define yourself . I had to give much thought to it and related significant experiences like my travels abroad and the death of my six year old brother.
