The Philippines is (hopefully) the only country on earth that has an entire island devoted entirely to witchcraft. It’s Siquijor Island, somewhere in the lower middle of the archipelago. As far as I know there aren’t any normal human inhabitants; everybody is either a Mangkukulam, an Aswang (a shape-shifting monster who eats human flesh), an Engkanto (garden-variety forest fairy), or a Manananggal (a woman who sprouts batwings and splits crosswise to fly off and slurp up fetuses, leaving her lower extremities safely in a grove somewhere), with the random Tikbalang (Phooka) here and there. With all the monsters who subsist on human flesh living there, I’m surprised they haven’t all upped and devoured one another through sheer desperate starvation.
Legend has it that the Philippines has a lot of supernatural phenomena cos it was once part of Lemuria. Stories about half human-half monsters are even scarier than spirits. *shudders*
