My memory is so bad, I can’t even remember what the results of the memory test were. I do know, however, that it needs a lot of improvement; I keep forgetting names and I hate identification questions because I can never recall the exact term being asked for.
There are many ways for me to sharpen my memory, and these strategies will actually be of great help now that finals week is near. I don’t think I have a problem with note taking because I take very detailed notes and make effective outlines. I also use cognitive monitoring when I go over my readings. However, I rarely ever use mnemonic strategies, which is probably why I tend to forget information after reading them. Since I am a visual learner, the keyword method would probably work best for me. I tried it out a couple of days ago and I understood what disorganized schizophrenia is because my cousin is suffering from that disorder.
The only problem I have with memory storage is that I never really take the time to go over my notes, unless I have a long test in two days or a quiz the following day. So that I can store information effectively, I plan on going over my notes and reading this week so I won’t be cramming the night before my long tests.
During the beginning of the year I bought myself a planner so that I can write down when I have tests or papers due as well as keep track of things that need to be done. Having recall cues definitely helped a lot because seeing what schoolwork is due for the week allows me to plan ahead, and that results in better time management. Although the keyword method is used for storing information, it can aid me in recalling facts. In the last Psych long test I took, I was able to remember the symptoms of disorganized schizophrenia because I could recall how my cousin had the same symptoms as the ones written in the textbook.
