Philippine Idol unimpressive premier

Philippine Idol’s not-so-impressive premiere

Disappointing! That’s what many of those who watched the initial telecast of the much-hyped local version of American Idol on ABC-5 say of Philippine Idol.

One of them even said that if Simon Cowell (one of three judges of the top-rating talent search in the United States) watched the telecast he’d be very happy he didn’t come to grace the premiere of the show.

Much of the criticism against the show is leveled at the three judges—singer Pilita Corrales, rapper Francis M, and composer-arranger-choral and orchestra conductor Ryan Cayabyab—who failed to spice up the show with their commentaries.

No, definitely they’re not Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon whose comments are what makes American Idol interesting. It’s not so much about the performers but who among them will please Simon, Randy, and Paula.

It seems that the first episode, mostly footage on the auditions held in Cebu and Davao, didn’t’ amuse fans of the American version. According to them, the local version lacked the wit and humor that makes American Idol very entertaining.

“It’s like watching something happening in a perya (the local term for a small-time carnival) with all those auditioning for a slot in Idol trying all the stunts possible. They were mostly irritating,” says Gianna Maniego, Life editor of this paper and an avid American Idol follower since its first season in 2002.

Ryan Agoncillo is miles away from Ryan Seacrest as host. Our local Ryan should first learn the art of repartee before he can actually be an effective host.

I guess we got used to the 3 American Idol judges because their comments are something to watch for. But what our local Philippine Idol judges lacked, the contestants ade up for it. Let’s take a look at some:

Maybe Ryan C, Pilita Corales and Francis M will catch up as the contestants narrow down to the Top 24. I was not disappointed with the premier. Though not the same as American Idol, the Philippine Idol proved to show entertainment value. That’s what it counts. I’m sure the next shows will be better
