Insider’s view of ‘Philippine Idol’ semi-finals at CCP
Happily, however, there were some auditionees who resisted the temptation to impress the judges by going in for the birit singing style that’s so popular in these parts. We hoped that they got extra plus points from the jurors for their self-control and good musical judgment.
At about this point, we got a clearer understanding of the tough task that faced the “Philippine Idol” judges. Aside from good singing voices, which many of the second-round auditionees possessed, we found ourselves focusing more on the “idol” part of the TV talent search’s title: What was there about this particular contestant that was of “star quality,” that not only singing experts, but the general public would delight in?
I know at this point the top 24 have been selected already. Sending home 142 contestants is not an easy task for the judges. From 166, the judges trimmed them down to 84; from 84, the hopefuls were slashed to 40; and lastly (for now) to only 24 like in “American Idol.”. This development signals the start of the live performances and public voting. Now I truly hope that the judges selected those with an “Idol” aura, a performer with talent. I am sure we will get a lot of talented Philippine Idol contestatns
