Philippine Idol” has just elevated reality TV in the country.

Philippine Idol top 24

While the show has attempted to locate drama and ferret out what’s cinematic several times over past audition and elimination episodes since it started airing on July 30, ABC–5’s attempt was at its most successful when local “Idol” chose its final 24 last Sunday.

What was more amazing than narrowing down thousands of hopefuls to just 24 was the manner it was served to local televiewers.

Signalling the inclusion of Armarie Lourdes Cruz, 27; Ira Patricia Marasigan, 21; Abigail Blanco, 24; Erika Jill Bautista, 24; Jellica Marie Mateo, 23; Paula Patricia Chavez, 23; Rina Lei Pangan, 26; Christina Otero, 25; Yasmin Rose Medina, 26; Maureen Marcelo, 26; Stephanie Lazaro Bainbrigge, 27; and Cherry Ann Chui, 22 for the girls. The top 12 males, meanwhile are Giancarlo Magdangal, 24; Joseph Astor, 27; Robert Bernadas, 26; Kenneth “Cajun” Dingle, 23; Paul Andrae Ybañez, 26; Freddie Cabael, 23; Reymond Sajor, 27; Miguel Mendoza, 16; Jan Kurt Nieto, 24; Christian Masaga, 26; Jasper Onyx Culala, 25; and Ramirr Grepo, 26, the judges dramatically sat each candidate to inform them of their fate, face to face. An avid “Idol” observer commented, “Idol couldn’t have done it any better. Our way was the most excellent by far. This is much better than how the elimination process was done in the States.”

The “Philippine Idol” captured what’s real and raw with the way the show was presented last Sunday. Unlike in American Idol where the top 40 are being called in one by one to be told of their fate, local “Idol” seamlessly altered the formula. One judge sits across one or two contestants, then he or she (the judge) delivers the verdict.
