It’s “Banda Night”. I missed watching the live show at SM Megacinema again because I am in Baguio City as I type this entry . But next week, I will be back “Inside the Philippine Idol” with more photos.
This is my first attempt at blogging while watching it live. I have included my own reactions as well as those of the judges. I think I have a lot to say considering that I have watched Philippine Idol since it was launched last July.
So here goes:
Gian Magdangal- “Pare Ko” by Eraserheads (Listen to Youtube)- I thought Gian performed like a true rocker but Ryan C advised that he tone down on his theatrics. I had noticed that Gian tended to exaggerate his movements whenever he rans around the stage. Wency thought that the song didn’t work for Gian Rating 7/10
Apple Chiu- “wag na wag mong sasabihin” by Kitchie Nadal (Listen to youtube) - I am glad to see that Apple changed her hairstyle and clothes which made her look like a true rockstar. She always seemed to come out so feminine in all her other performances which came out boring already. Her song came out pitchy whenever she screamed her notes though. . Rating: 6/10
Miguel Mendoza - ‘Harana” from Parokya ng Edgar (Listen to Youtube). Ugh Miguel came out pitchy at times. His movements are still awkward but he was full of emotions as he sang this song. Wency Cornejo thought the song worked for Miguel. Pilita thought the song was not suited for Miguel. Ryan C thought it went well . He had something to say about Miguel’s sharp notes in most of his songs. He attributes it to physiological changes in his vocal chords. So I was right after all. Rating: 5/10
Jan Nieto- “Tuloy Pa Rin” By Neo Colors (Listen to Youtube ) I’m beginning to like Jan’s performance. He had a few pitchy notes but I think it’s due to the sound system. Wency is unsure of his performance and felt that Jan didn’t emote very well. It didn’t seem that he didn’t connect with the song. Ryan agrees that his performance wasn’t solid. He advised that he continues to improve himself every week. But Jan explained that the song lyrics made him interpret it in detached manner. Rating: 6/10
Jeli Mateo- “Paglisan” by Color it Red (Listen to Youtube). Nice attire and fashion statement but I didn’t quite like Jeli’s performance. This song is quite meaningful to anyone who has lost a loved one. Wency can’t help comparing Jeli to the original singer. The musical arrangement lost the original meaning of the song. She also didn’t have the right timing at the start of the song. Ryan C notices how weak Jeli is compared to the other girls in the competition. Rating : 4/10
Mau Marcelo - “So Slow” by Freestyle (Listen to Youtube)- Good that Mau chose light and colorful attire which looks more cheerful than her usual black clothes. Her pitch and song delivery was perfect. She just wowed me. Wency thought her clothes were off but admitted that she had the strongest performance so far. Ryan C advised Mau to stop crying and whining whether she wins or lose. I often wondered what made Mau so tearful in the past. I think she felt inferior in her past performances. Rating: 9/10
Ken Dingle- “Ligaya” from Eraserheads (Listen at Youtube). Oh my god he started off from the start till the end of the song. How awful ! He forgot the lyrics. No wonder he sounded off from the very start. Wency thought he should have been prepared as lyrics are important in the competition. Ryan C thought he was promising at the start but his past performances have not been great especially tonight. I totally agree . I never liked Ken from the start ever since he was chosen over Onyx. He should be out tonight. Rating: 1/10
Arms Cruz-”Makita kang Muli” by Sugarfree (Listen to Youtube) . Pretty good performance but was flat in some parts of the song. Wency was waiting all night for a hair-raising performance and found it in Arms. Ryan C thinks that Arms is so polished and professional. He added that Mau and Arms are his Philippine Idol for tonight. Rating: 8/10
Pau Chavez- “ForeverMore” by Side One (Listen to Youtube) - Excellent voice. Never mind if she suddenly shifted her key . I also like her jacket this time as it is different from her boyish looking jackets in the past. I wish she would change her fashion statements. Wency thinks Pau came out as the most confident and gave out the best aura among the contestant. He thought it was a fantastic performance. Pilita thought she had many sharps and flats. Ryan C advised her to raise the bar as her performance is already in plateau.
I think something is wrong with the sound system as most of the contestants came out very pitchy . Maybe the sound is too loud or something .
For tonight’s performance, KEN DINGLE should be out. or I’ll scream FOUL! Listen to his latest performance. I totally agree with Ryan C that Ken Dingle has gone from BAD to WORSE. To think that I had hope he could still improve.
