it’s Movie Themes and Musical Night for the Top 5 Philippine Idol Finalist and the guest judge is Tony-awardee and Broadway singer , Lea Salonga. Though Francis M is back, I’m glad that Philippine Idol continued with the guest judge to add excitement to the show. Each Finalist gets to sing two songs, one from a movie theme and the second from a musical
The first part of the show was the Movie Theme Songs. Each finalist had a short movie clip produced by “Philippine Idol Films”. The movies added spark to the songs being sung by each Finalist. My ranking for this round are:(Thanks to starmometer.com for the youtube videos)
1. Mau Marcelo sang Diamonds are Forever (View YouTube Video)
What a brillant performance. I think Mau felt really beautiful inside because she exuded so much confidence. It showed in her delivery, her facial expression and her solid vocals. I loved her. Kudos to her fashion stylist for making Mau appear slim and gorgeous. The audience couldn’t stop clapping. Even Lea Salong was truly amazed.
2. Jan Nieto sang Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang (View YouTube Video)
The movie skit involving a triangle with Jellie and Suey exuded so much drama that I could almost feel Jan’s dilemma as he sang. Jan had the perfect vocals but had lackluster performance in his moves. I think Jan isn’t too comfortable in moving around the stage.
3. Pow Chavez sang So Far So Good (View YouTube Video)
The movie clip where she’s given an array of ladies clothes was so amusing. She finally gets to wear a dress just for the movies. Aww, isn’t she just adorable? Pow’s performance is just alright. If you compare her performance with Mau, Pow just didn’t deliver tonight. I like how Pow ’s fashion style is evolving. See, she doesn’t need to wear manly jackets all the time.
4. Gian Carlo Magdangal sang Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga (view YouTube Video)
I just didn’t feel anything with Gian’s performance. I might call it boring but with his good looks , it makes up for his average performance. Happy birthday Gian!
5. Miguel Mendoza sang Growing Up
I used to like Miguel because his voice was quite impressive for a young man. I first noticed him during the top 12 male finalist but he hasn’t improved in his stage presence. He’s become predictable and boring.
So Mau Marcelo wins hands down during this first round of the show.
The next part was musicals. The Philippine Idol prepared props suitable for the song in the musical. My ranking as follows
1. Gian Carlo Magdangal sang Greased Lightning
What an enjoyable performance. It makes me want to dance with Gian. One can see that musicals is really Gian’s strength. The audience were simply astounded that they gave thunderous claps for Gian.
2. Pow Chavez sang I ‘ll give my life for you View Youtube Video)
I just love her sustained notes. She sang just as beautifully as Lea Salonga would. The china dress look is another first for Pow. Though not exactly a dress since it had pants, I’m pleased to see Pow doing her best to change her fashion statement. Pow does not need to wear a dress. Thanks Lea for bringing that up.
3. Mau Marcelo sang And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going (View YouTube Video)
Her performance wasn’t impressive as “Diamonds are Forever” mainly because Gian took the storm for this Musicals round.
4. Jan Nieto sang Corner of the Sky
What a beautiful song which was perfectly sang but Gian. There is still that pained look when he sings. No wonder his mean crticis think he looks “constipated”. Jan needs to watch his facial movements via video so he can improve in his delivery. Jan is getting more gorgeous each performance. He has the look but his stage presence is still mediocre.
5. Miguel Mendoza sang Can You Feel the Love Tonight
Boring and predictable performance. Enough said.
Who are the winners for the night?
I agree with Lea Salonga that Mau is the winner for the Movie Themes while Gian for the Musical. Though Mau and Gian rendered the best performance, Mau stood out . It is because Mau sang like she never did before, strong, powerful and exuding with confidence.
Who should be out?
Realistically, either Miguel Mendoza or Jan Nieto should be booted out. But since life is unfair and not every finalist has the money, Pow could be out since her performance did not shine out tonight. I hope she stays. Pow is a contender to the Philippine Idol. I will cry if Pow, Gian and Mau will be eliminated. Philippine Idol fans know that Jan Nieto and Miguel Mendoza are inferior singers and performers compared to my own prediction for the TOP 3 Philippine Idol Winners.
It was such an enjoyable night . I met Jove Francisco at the ticket counter. I had problems getting my ticket allocation as it was given out to someone else. Ugh. I managed to get inside as the ticket ladies recognized me. I was able to get seated by the center seat since the usherette also recognized me. That’s what I get for being a Philippine Idol fan. Geesh, I have been watching the live shows since the start so you better let me in. Anyway , as I took photos of the show, the lady next to me chatised me for taking photos “I don’t think you can do that here”. I said that it’s allowed as long as the flash is turned off. I said I have been taking photos for the past shows. Then she asked if I was a reporter. “No, I’m a blogger”. I found out she’s the web person for Philippine Idol.
Well I didn’t expect her to know who I am and the humble ABC lady goes”I don’t know you”. Naturally, duh….Well, I added “if you google the keyword PHILIPPINE IDOL, my blog ranks number 4″ . Then I asked “Maybe you know Jove Francisco. He’s a blogger too and works with ABC”. Her negative reply shocked me. She doesn’t know JOVE FRANCISCO!?!@&&#!+ ! . Even my husband recognized Jove during the Dance Night. Oh well, that’s life. I wish I had hollered at Jove to seat beside me but he was way too far to hear me.
And I met Patty. I’m glad she said “hi ” to me. I’m happy she finally found a way to see Gian live and have photos at that. If there is a will, there is a way. Now that’s what you call a fan! Gian is definitely lucky to have dedicated fans like Patty.
