Standards and Big Band Night
Old standards for the Big Band Era. What a refreshing change and a delight for us oldies (err over 40 years old). All the Top 4 [tag]Philippine Idol[/tag] Finalist gave their stellar performances. At this stage of the competition, it is expected that they excel with their singing style and performance. Most Philippine Idol bloggers would agree that Gian and Mau are the more superior performers but Jan Nieto and Miguel Mendoza did an excellent job tonight. Philippine Idol has gone a long way when it first started out with the Top 12 Finalists Performance Night. You can see the results through the number of commercials, the number of celebrity guests, the number of hits in our blogs.
The popularity of the Philippine Idol has finally arrived. Aside from the loyal Philippine Idol fans, celebrity guests present were Lucy Torres, Loren Legarda, Gretchen Baretto , Tony Boy Cojuangco , Dominic Ochoa, Judy Ann and of course, Philippine Idol bloggers who created the Philippine Idol buzz. This time, I was able to get my 10 tickets. In the past two weeks, my usual reserved seats were given away due to the high demand of people clamoring to get inside Philippine Idol Theater. But where were these people during the early episodes? It ticked me off that my tickets were given away just like that. Fortunately, that has been settled now and I will be able to blog more Inside Philippine Idol highlights during the TOP 3 and Finale Night.
Anyway, I still need to rank the Top 4 Philippine Idol Finalists’ performance. Like the die-hard Philippine Idol fan, I made sure I had photos with my Top 3 Philippine Idol finalists because it might get extremely difficult to get photos taken with them after this week.

Gian is my number one choice because he sang so smoothly and went with the flow of his music. He brought the meaning of Big Band Night through the rendition of his song and body movements. Perhaps his theater experience gave him an edge over the other Finalists. He’s truly a great performer who gave elegance to this Big Band night.

2. Mau Marcelo

Waray Waray
Mau showed so much energy in “waray-waray” that she brought the house down. You should have seen the audience cheering endlessly at the end of her “waray-waray” song. Gretchen Baretto gave Mau a standing ovation. The standing ovation and the encouraging cheers continued on for several minutes. Even if her first song,My Funny Valentine was a bit dragging, it showed her capability to sing in various vocal ranges. So why did I just rank her no. 2?
Gian and Mau are almost the same ranking for me but there can’t be a tie so I chose Mau for second place. I cannot fault her singing style and her gorgeous look these days but I thought her outfit was not a winning piece. The gown made her look fatter than usual. Ugh what happened to her fashion stylist? The fit was all wrong. Mau wore a more flattering dress last week when she sang “Diamonds are Forever.” Mau ranked 0.5 lower than Gian for tonight, just a teeny tiny notch lower than Gian.

I love how he is more comfortable with himself. He doesn’t emote a contorted face anymore. Now his mean critics can’t say he has a constipated look. Jan Nieto looked very handsome and debonair in his looks. He’s relaxed and sure of himself. He deserves to be in the Top 3. His determination to improve himself has shown so much in the recent perofrmances. In fact, I wouldn’t mind if he even makes it to the Top 2. He deserves a lot of credit for MOST improved Philippine Idol Finalist.

I’ve Got You Under My Skin
Though “Idol Hearthrob: Miguel is quite popular with the young crowd, he isn’t as talented as my Top 3 choices. I have to give credit to Miguel for a wonderful performance tonight. One can see that he really tried to be more flexible in his movements but there is still that awkwardness. Miguel tears after Ryan Agoncillo asks for his reaction towards Mr. C’s comment that he will compose music with Miguel. Mr C. is tactful indeed. It was his way of saying nicely that Miguel need not be inside Top 3. It’s Miguel’s consolation prize and it is an honor to sing a song composed by Mr. C himself. Those tears might have earned more sympathy votes for Miguel. I won’t be surprised if Miguel wins this round. I remember Jasmine Trias tearing at Simon Cowell’s remark that it was her turn to leave that night. As we all know, Jasmine Trias made it to the Top 3, American Idol Season 3.
Anything can happen. All top 4 finalists are vulnerable. It’s safe to say at this point that all of the top 4 Finalists could go on to secure recording contracts if they decide to pursue that path, but the additional exposure of winning the competition will only jumpstart one career.
It was a night to remember as this is the first time that all the Philippine Idol Finalists lived up to the standards of a Philippine Idol. Starting next week, Philippine Idol will be shown at the Araneta Coliseum.
