THE LATEST EDITION of [tag]American Idol[/tag], the popular reality TV show in the US, has an Indian flavour this season. [tag]Sanjaya Malakar[/tag] of Indian origin has made it to the top 24 (semi-finals) and has survived the first two weeks, during which eight contestants got eliminated, four each week. Sanjaya is now in the final 16.
Who is Sanjaya? Sanjaya Malakar is just 17 and hails from Federal Way, Washington. He auditioned for American Idol along with his sister, Shyamali, in Seattle, WA. To the family’s utter delight, the brother-sister duo got selected for the quarterfinals or Hollywood round, called so because it is held in Hollywood. While Shyamali got eliminated in the Hollywood round, Sanjaya made it to the semi-finals. The semi-final line-up consists of the top 24 contestants – 12 women and 12 men – and Sanjaya is one of them. And, he is the only teen male contestant in the top 24.
Sanjaya has got an endearing disposition. He is thin, shy, and is quite self-conscious. He has got a voice that is reasonably good. However, he stands out from the pack not because he is the most talented, but because he is way too timid. And, it shows.
