Tonight’s top 4 episode is going to be very different from the previous seasons of American Idol. Instead of having the contestants sing two solo songs apiece, they both get one solo song and one duet. Slash, this week’s mentor, has been Twittering about how excited he was for tonight’s Rock theme. Will the contestants live up to his praises?
Adam Lambert – Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin
Adam has the perfect vocals for this song. He started out the song really cool, then surprises everyone with an amazing rock wail. I got the sense that he was trying to play it safe tonight, because his version stayed pretty faithful to the original. Great performance nonetheless – and he looked great too! I think the rest of the top 4 will be hard-pressed to beat that.
Allison Iraheta – Crybaby by Janis Joplin
Allison met up with Adam’s stylist to get her hair done, and she looked fantastic. She picked a great song too! For a moment there, I was worried that tonight would be her last night, but she should be safe with that awesome performance back there. Judges weren’t too crazy about it though; I think Allison deserved way more praise and credit for what she did.
Kris Allen and Danny Gokey – Renegade by Styx
Here it comes… the first duet! Their voice blending was okay and while it certainly was interesting to have something new on the show, I don’t understand what singing together is supposed to prove. Kris says it took them a while to figure out what to sing
Kris Allen – Come Together by The Beatles
Kris originally wanted to do Revolution but changed his mind and did Come Together instead. The musical arrangement stayed the same, but Kris did a lot of vocal changes. Even though the band overpowered him, he still did a great job. But it looks like I may have been right when I said that nobody was going to top Adam’s performance – even Simon said so.
Danny Gokey – Dream On by Aerosmith
Ok, if there’s anyone who’ll be leaving the show this week, I think it might be Danny. Slash said he needed to nail that rock wail at the end of the song for it to really come together, but at the start I could already see it falling apart. Song starts out really breathy – for some reason, Danny kept taking breaths in all the weird places. As for that rock wail towards the end – sounded more like a couple of cats mating. That was a really bad performance, though Danny seems to think he did better than what the judges thought.
Allison Iraheta and Adam Lambert – Slowride by Foghat
The duet was excellent. Perfect combination. Allison and Adam were both confident, the song both suited their vocals, but I think what they had that Danny and Kris didn’t have was chemistry. Simon thinks that they won the battle of the duets, and that Adam may have given Allison a chance to stay on this week.
I think tonight may be Danny Gokey’s last night. Who do you think is going to go?
