HOWEVER… talent is not enough to make it in showbusiness girl. Wala ka pa sa tugatog ng tagumpay you’ve already got an attitude problem! With the obnoxious behavior she has been displaying the entire week, I’m sure the academy teachers are now scratching their heads in regret over making such a wrong, wrong choice. Big DUH guys.

Out of the 38 pop star hopefuls , sixteen scholars have been selected to train with and compete against each other . One will become the grand star dreamer at the premiere of ABS-CBN’s newest reality-based show, “Pinoy Dream Academy,”

The show was launched live in a musical kick-off party at the Cebu Capitol Grounds where the 38 aspirants performed before a big crowd. The launch was hosted by Toni Gonzaga and Sam Milby.

Singer-composer Jim Paredes, the academy’s headmaster, will lead a team of instructors who will train the 16 aspirants inside the academy in Quezon City for over three months.

They will undergo rigid musical and artistic training including singing, songwriting and dance inside the academy. A weekly live performance will be held to showcase what each student has learned in the past week.

A panel of jurors will choose who among the contestants will be nominated for eviction and the viewers will vote who they want to remain inside the academy until the last contestant emerges as the winner.

The show is the brainchild of the Netherlands-based production company Endemol, the creator of “Big Brother” and the “Deal or No Deal” shows.

WHEN ABC-5 announced that it had gotten permission from the “American Idol” franchise to produce the hit singing search’s local counterpart, the channel won important plus points with viewers.

The feat was a feather in its cap, and caused the relatively new channel to upstage the major TV networks, due to the popularity of the original US show.

Franchising coup

Of course, the majors couldn’t be expected to take the franchising coup on the chin without trying to neutralize it.

Thus, it was no surprise when ABS-CBN in turn announced that it was developing its own franchise-based search for outstanding young singers, to be titled “Pinoy Dream Academy.”

Instead of fast-tracking the start of the competition proper of its “Philippine Idol” show, however, ABC-5 continued to bide its time, telecasting a detailed coverage of its initial audition phases.

Despite its advantage in terms of time, it, in effect, allowed “Dream Academy” to catch up. So, as of this writing, we now have the strange spectacle of “Philippine Idol” still to announce its final 12 bets, while on Aug. 26, “Dream Academy” will start its contest proper after choosing its 16 scholars from 38 semifinalists.

More popular

Of course, the “Idol” franchise is more popular than the locally unseen and untested “Academy” format, so ABC-5 still has the advantage.

But, Channel 2’s “Academy” format could in time prove to be even more viewable, because it combines its talent-search element with the “in-house” factor made popular locally by “Pinoy Big Brother.”

In other words, viewers could get more personally involved with the “Academy’s” singers because they would not just be seeing them perform, but also getting to know them really well as people, as they view them living in the Academy’s house

The format of the Pinoy Dream Academy is more appealing to mass audiences. Pinoy Big Brother has gained so much popularity that success is almost proven. Personally, I still prefer the Idol Format because eventually, a star needs to garner popularity. This can be gauged through text voting. Maybe Pinoy Dream Academy has text voting too.

The premiere date of Pinoy Dream Academy has been set on August 12, 2006 on ABS-CBN Channel and on Studio 23,

So what is Pinoy Dream Academy? According to this site:

The concept of the show, although it varies from country to country where it is shown remains the same. Once a week, the contestants have to perform in a primetime show where they perform songs they have prepared during the past week. Although the show has already been compared to Pop Idol in the UK due to its being primarily a singing contest, it is partly viewed as a reality show because viewers could watch the daily lives of the contestants through live streaming - a concept it borrows from big brother. Every week, one contestant will say goodbye or as they call it be ”expelled” from the academy. Contestants either wil be in the danger zone or safe zone and the one who wil be booted is determined by a voting system.

Will this be a better show than Philippine Idol? Or are we just seeing the Philippine Idol audition rejects? Maybe the Philippine Idol judges might have made a mistake too. Let’s hope Pinoy Dream Academy will be better.
