Operator: “Can I have your multi purpose card number first, Sir?
Customer: “It’s eh…; hold on……6102049998-45-54610″
Operator : “OK… you’re… Mr Singh and you’re calling from 17 Jalan Kayu. Your home number is 40942366, your office 76452302 and your mobile is 0142662566. Which number are you calling from now Sir?”
Customer: “Home! How did you get all my phone numbers?”
Operator : “We are connected to the system Sir”
Customer: “May I order your Seafood Pizza…”
Operator : “That’s not a good idea Sir”
Customer: “How come?”
Operator : “According to your medical records, you have high blood pressure and even higher cholesterol level Sir”
Customer: “What?… What do you recommend then?”
Operator : “Try our Low Fat Hokkien Mee Pizza. You’ll like it”
Customer: “How do you know for sure?”
Operator : “You borrowed a book entitled “Popular Hokkien Dishes” from the National Library last week Sir”
Customer: “OK I give up… Give me three family size ones then, how much will that cost?”
Operator : “That should be enough for your family of 10, Sir. The total is $49.99″
Customer: “Can I pay by credit card?”
Operator : “I’m afraid you have to pay us cash,Sir. Your credit card is over the limit and you owe your bank $3,720.55 since October last year. That’s not including the late payment charges on your housing loan, Sir.”
Customer: “I guess I have to run to the neighbourhood ATM and withdraw some cash before your guy arrives”
Operator : “You can’t Sir. Based on the records,you’ve reached your daily limit on machine withdrawal today”
Customer: “Never mind just send the pizzas, I’ll have the cash ready. How long is it gonna take anyway?”
Operator : “About 45 minutes Sir, but if you can’t wait you can always come and collect it on your motorcycle…”
Customer: ” What!”
Operator : “According to the details in system ,you own a Scooter,…registration number 1123…”
Customer: ” ????”
Operator : “Is there anything else Sir?”
Customer: “Nothing… by the way… aren’t you giving me that 3 free bottles of cola as advertised?”
Operator : “We normally would Sir, but based on your records you’re also diabetic……. ”
Customer: “#$$^%&$@$%^”
Operator “Better watch your language Sir. Remember on 15th July 1987 you were convicted of using abusive language on a policeman…?”
Customer: [Speechless]

Fondue at the Swiss Inn

My sister is 18 years old today. Since today is a school day, we celebrated it yesterday at Swiss Inn near Manila Peninsula Hotel. Yum, we had Fondue feast.

Let me just talk about the fondue part….

We had Traditional Cheese Fondue

Then Beef Fondue with dipping sauces

with a Four Seasons drink

Then finally dessert..Toblerone fondue

So now I feel so fat and bloated.

First Filipino American and woman hired as White House head chef

The remarkable thing about the first woman hired as White House head chef is that she’s a naturalized U.S. citizen from the Philippines. She has worked as an assistant chef at the White House for the past 10 years . The new chef, Cristeta Comerford , has been trained in French classical techniques and specializes in ethnic and American cuisine. She holds a degree in food technology from the University of the Philippines , the same degree as my mom. I read that the First Lady wanted more Mexican dishes. Maybe Cris can even introduce lumpia in one of her menus.

body’s will is weaker than the mind’s

I consider the statement “the body’s will is weaker than the mind’s” a pathetic excuse of a person who refuses to take responsibility for his or her actions. The relationship between the body and the mind can be likened to that of a car and a driver. The car has the capacity to take you places, but it does not move on its own; it must have a driver in order for it to be able to fulfill its function. It is the same with the body because it merely does what the mind wants it to do—it has no will of its own. This is why I don’t like it when people use the phrase “sins of the flesh”; the only people who are guilty of that kind of sin are people who have no control over their desires.

A very good example of this is food, since eating is a bodily pleasure we all like to indulge in every now and then. Lunch and dinner are one of the highlights of my day because there is nothing more satisfying than a delicious meal after a long morning or afternoon’s work. In fact, I enjoy eating so much that there are times when end up having seconds and thirds, resulting in rapid weight gain. I’d like to keep my slim build, not just because I’ve been conditioned to accept that thin means beauty; it would also be a bummer if I become too fat for my clothes. Currently, I feel like it’s time to cut down on my food intake since my face looks a lot rounder than normal. And it takes a heroic effort for me to avoid “evil food” when my mouth starts watering for French fries and Coke. But I manage to do it because I know that giving in to this urge will only result in temporary satisfaction and a bulging belly.

Smoking cigarettes is another bodily pleasure I enjoy. However, I do not consider this a “weakness” because I know why I smoke and I can limit the number of cigarettes I consume. I smoke primarily because the nicotine helps me relax when I feel stressed and calms me down when I am giddy with happiness or excitement. But when my lungs start feeling heavy and abused, I stop smoking until my lungs start to feel better again.

Lastly, it just occurred to me that I could be curled up in bed, sleeping, instead of doing this project. But since I already slept ten hours last night and this will be due in a week’s time, I choose to forgo the nap and keep on working. It is simply a matter of having discipline because after all, we can’t always do what we want. But given the proper time and occasion, there is absolutely nothing wrong with indulging in a fattening McDonald’s meal or a long, sweet nap.

Not your ordinary coffee shop

Starbucks’ coffee is just too expensive and boring. A mug costs half my allowance. An alternative is Herricks , a neighborhood coffee shop which is unique because they serve quality coffee and the ambiance is relaxing . Note the swing chairs. Crepes servings are huge too. Cool huh?

One of my favorite restaurants is “Cafe Mediterrenean” because I just drool over the gyros sandwiches. That pic above is a falafel but I also orderedhummus . This is making me hungry.

The making of buko salad

So today being New Year’s Eve, we’re preparing for our midnight meal. One of which is Buko (meaning young coconut) salad . Fruits are supposed to bring good luck. I don’t know how…

Of course we have to buy the young coconut from street vendors:

Then have it cut …

Set the ingredients such as the Buko (Young coconut), seedless grapes, diced Fuji apples, a mish mash of Del Monter fruit cocktail, nata de coco, kaong , sweet corn and lychees. Then add condensed milk and Nestle Cream.

We were at Scout Borromeo, Quezon City in the afternoon . Using my cellphone camera, I thought I’d take pics of these fruit stands since they looked so colorful.
