MiniPosts Plugin for WordPress

So I’m trying out the MiniPosts Plugin for WordPress. It’s supposed to be an approach to “asides”, or small posts, in WordPress. When posting an entry, it allows you to mark entries as “mini” posts which is handled differently than normal posts.

Bad Behavior

I’ve finally upgraded nimrodel.net and BLOGGED to wordpress 1.5 and the best comment spam plugin I’ve tested is Bad Behavior. Bad Behavior was designed and built by watching actual spambots which harvested email addresses, posted comment spam, and used fake referrers. By logging their entire HTTP requests and comparing them to HTTP requests of legitimate users, it is possible to detect most spambots. Bad Behavior blocks spambots with a 412 error. By preventing spambots and other malicious bots from ever accessing any of your pages, your bandwidth usage will drop significantly. That’s a bonus!

Bad Behavior actually works. In less than 5 hours after installation, it blocked 300 bot attempts.
download firefox

Thanks Will for the NoFollow Comment Spam Prevention thread. I downloaded the Wordpress plugin which implements the nofollow stuff. Now that should definitelly work. Googleblog, Yahoo! Search and MSN Search Blog discuss the effects of the rel =”nofollow” tag on individual links.

“From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel=”nofollow”) on hyperlinks, those links won’t get any credit when we rank websites in our search results. This isn’t a negative vote for the site where the comment was posted; it’s just a way to make sure that spammers get no benefit from abusing public areas like blog comments, trackbacks, and referrer lists.”

All the blog owners should unite and install this NoFollow plugin for wordpress. Here is Movable Type ‘nofollow’ plugin.

nimrodel.net combat against comment spam

I’ve moved nimrodel.net to my dedicated server because it was eating up the bandwidth over at the the protagonist dot com. Around 10 GB!!!! argh. And the protag forums was consuming as much as that too. The bandwidth in the-protagonist dot com is almost half that of the almost 200 domains hosted at the Protagonist WebHosting. That’s how bad it is.

I was just lazy to move the files (thanks to Pei for figuring out that warning error)… Anyway, the domain has propagated now and I’ve added 2 wonderful hacks against comments spam. I’ve told you that I added Coffelius Graphic Code Generator already but…I remember spammers can also add it manually so I installed a second hack which is the Kitten’s Comment Pay . It redirects moderated comments to a page asking for payment. Hehe, the comment generated by spam words are automatically moderated and then shown to a payment page. Hehe… this is one of the coolest hacks to combat comment spam. So there…. Test it out when you comment at my online journal.

Check other Combat Comment Spam techniques for wordpress. There is no plugin that you can install and be spam-free forever. Why ? Because the spammers can also download the plugins, see how they work, and figure out a way around them.

Humans can only post comments

Got so pissed because of the comments spam, so I upgraded nimrodel.net to wordpress 1.2.2. Then I slowly added comments spam plugins like:

- Kitten’s Comment Pay which redirects moderated comments to a page asking for payment.
- Blacklist which checks each entered comment against a standard blacklist and either approves or holds the comment for later approval or automatically deletes it.

But the above plug-ins still give me comments spam . I thought the only way for spam not to give me hits on my domain is this plugin that adds a graphic generated number which you need to read and then write on a new field of the post to be able to post. This way only humans will be able to comment a post. This is called the Trencaspammers 1.0rc wp plugin anti-spam para wordpress and the code looks like this:

So far so good :)
