Three days ago, David Cook began recording his first single. He revealed to ABC News Radio that he’s the type to just hole up and write songs by himself; had never co-written songs with anyone before. It’s been a cool experience, he said, to be able to attack the songs from another standpoint. Working with other songwriters also allowed him to reveal more of himself and delving into some aspects of his life and his experiences that he would never have felt comfortable sharing a year ago. Despite being a solo artist, David hopes that his album will have a band feel to it. His old bandmate from Midwest Kings, Neal Tiemann, will be recording with him at least, so it’ll feel like the old band days, at least!

As for the American Idol Tour, David Cook’s having the time of his life. “I love it,” he says. “Every city has its own kind of stamp, every city has its own vibe.” The highlight of the tour so far is playing golf in Portland with Michael Johns.

And speaking of tours, David also mentioned that his concert date in Manila hasn’t been confirmed yet. :( Looks like we’ll have to try not to get too excited as we sit tight and wait for more updates!

David Cook’s Autographed Guitar Auction

The Taste for a Cure charity event is also holding an auction that will benefit the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California. Besides items and memorabilia from The Eagles, Chris Daughtrey, Bon Jovi, and Reba McEntire, David Cook’s autographed Epiphone Les Paul Special II Heritage guitar is also part of the auctioned lot. This is the very first guitar he signed after his American Idol win - not to mention that Les Pauls have superior sound quality that no other guitars can match.

The retail value of this unsigned Les Paul model is about $250. But with David Cook’s signature on the body, the current bid for the guitar is a whopping $5,000. Crazy, huh?

If you’ve got over five thousand dollars to spare, you can place your bid for David Cook’s autographed Les Paul here. Sounds a bit much but hey, it’s for a good cause. People have spent more money for far more frivolous things.

Also, I found a video of David Cook’s performance of Livin’ on a Prayer at the Taste for a Cure fundraiser. I’d embed the video but the poster disabled it, boo.

David Cook: I’m No Sex Symbol!

He’s the new American Idol, but don’t call David Cook a sex symbol!

Although throngs of girls have been fanning themselves over the 25-year-old during the show’s run, the singer says that’s not what he wants out of his newfound fame.

“It’s nice and flattering for people to say, but I want to be more than just that,” the modest rocker tells OK!. “I want to be an artist. You hear stories about groupies in hotels. I don’t want to get caught up in that.”

Certainly, AI alum Kimberly Caldwell, 26, would approve of David’s approach. The two recently went out on date after the Idol champ asked the season two contestant out live on television on her show Idol Tonight. And while they were totally in tune, don’t expect a permanent duet.

“We had a good time,” he says. “If schedules warrant it, we may hang out again.”

With the AI tour coming up — starting July 1 — David will have very little time for dating, much less working out! The Blue Springs, Mo. native dropped 15 pounds over the run of the show.

“I cut out drinking and eating the foods I shouldn’t have been eating,” he explains.

But David admits he’s still a little soft around the middle: “That’s where the work comes in!”
